Wow!! What a month I've had. This year's Summer Exhibition has been an incredible one! Sales were way beyond what I expected, the lampshades a particular favourite. I now have a lot of work to make new lampshades for all the 'empty' lamp bases around the Gallery! It's also been an amazing month-long 'ego trip' for me, meeting some real 'fans' of my work and I have enough commissioned work to keep me busy till Christmas!
My next public showing in the Gallery will be the pre-Christmas Open Weekend which will start with a Mulled Wine & Mince Pie evening on Friday 5th December, 5pm - 9pm. The Gallery will then be open Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th, 10am - 4pm each day. As well as my original Batik work for sale, there will be a wide selection of prints, paperweights and cards, a perfect opportunity to buy Christmas presents with a difference!
I've been working on this 'Art Nouveau' Irises lampshade for several weeks and finally it's finished. Each panel is 6'x12"and there are six of them - a lot of work!
This is a larger size than my usual lampshades (12"tall x 12" diameter), the biggest I can do, and it took up the entire width of my light-table while I was working on it.
'Art Nouveau Irises' is for sale in the Summer Exhibition for £495
Two of my favourite things, Irises and the Art Nouveau style, combine here in this small Batik panel.
This 12"x8" panel 'Art Nouveau Irises' with it's striped border is now SOLD. The colours are really vibrant and the marbled, crackle background really suits the style, inspired by the Art Nouveau period 'crackle' glass. I used this one to try out the colours for the 'Art Nouveau Irises Lampshade'
'Art Nouveau Lilies' (pink) 'Art Nouveau Lilies' (white) SOLD
At the same time as working on the 'Iris' design, I worked on these ones with lilies, trying out two different colour combinations. I was particularly pleased with the the cream, blue and pink one, as well as the stylised 'whiplash' shapes in the leaves. I may well work this design into an 'Art Nouveau Lilies' lampshade in the future.
'Art Nouveau Poppy' (red) SOLD 'Art Nouveau Poppy' (orange)
These Art Nouveau inspired Batik originals, (each one 35cm x 25cm inc frame) are FOR SALE, framed and back-lit for £150 each. If you are interested in buying one, email me. I can post anywhere, just ask me and I will work out the post & packing cost.
I love the Art Nouveau 'whiplash' lines and the flowing curves. One of my favourite artists is Alphonse Mucha whose work certainly was an inspiration for all this latest work.
This is one of a pair of lampshades, one with red and one with orange poppies, that I was commissioned to make for a fan of the Art Nouveau period. I loved making them and was delighted with how they turned out, although the waxing of the background was fiendishly difficult!
I have used the Batik crackle effect particularly on the background as it reminds me of the 'crackle' glass produced in the Art Nouveau period.
Before the lampshade is made up, you can see it is a large and complicated piece of work ....
This is the one with the red poppies. It would have been tempting to make just one panel of the design, leaving the rest crackle background but I particularly like the intricate flowing style of the design going around the whole shade, all six panels.
This, with the bright orange poppies, shows a close-up of three of the six panels.
If you are interested in commissioning a lampshade like these Poppies, or one with different flowers, or in fact any Art Nouveau style lampshade, just send me an email and I would be happy to talk about it. Prices start from £250
This turned out just how I wanted, using the crackle effect for the textures of the stonework, peeling stucco and old Venetian bricks. The names on the doorbells are so Italian! I worked from a photograph that I took of a crumbling wall by an ancient doorway near St Marks.
I've just ordered a frame for it which is beautiful - (and expensive) - but what the heck? The finished work, backlit, will take pride of place in my 'Venice' collection at this year's Summer Exhibition.
This Batik original 'Venice Doorbells' (50cm x 38cm inc frame) is now FOR SALE, framed and back-lit for £395. If you are interested in buying it, email me. I can post it anywhere, just ask and I will work out the post & packing and insurance cost.
