Welcome to the Buffy Robinson website. Here you can see the largest ever collection of my Batik work. My canalside Gallery in Shropshire is open by appointment, so please email me if you would like to arrange a visit and I would be happy to show you around.

Just in time to wish you a Happy Christmas!!

Phew!  Only just finished this Batik in time to make it into my Christmas card for this year.

As you can see, I'm still stuck in my art nouveau phase!

Fiat 500 Lampshade

This is one of the more unusual of my recent commissions, and from a real Fiat 500 fan!  I designed it from photos he took in Turin, with the car set against a background of beautiful Italian paving.  It was all quite a challenge, getting all the reflections right and all the paving brick by brick- but great fun to do.

Butterfly Lampshade

This lampshade took me a bit longer than I meant it too!  I was commissioned to make it by a good friend as a present for his five year old daughter, to go in her bedroom in their new house.  The brief was 'pink flowers and butterflies' and that's just what she got.  I got a bit carried away with the number of butterflies but it was a great fun project!

After waxing the cracked white sky around the butterflies and flowers, the butterfly shapes were left as silhouettes and I was able to treat each one as a separate 'mini' Batik, so each butterfly had its own individual colour sequence.  The bottom half was dyed as a whole with a total of 5 colours from pink, through blue, green and violet to black.

.....and here it is in situ.

Lets hope it gives her childish pleasure for years and she passes it on to her own daughter like my children have with their nursery lampshades.

What a buzz!!

The Summer Exhibition finished yesterday!  I can't believe how quickly the time has gone and how well the Exhibition has been received by all who have visited the Gallery.  I met some great people saying great things about my work and am getting lots of follow up emails asking about possible commissions.  It's just been a month-long ego trip for me!

It was such a success, I am planning to open the Gallery again for the Bank Holiday weekend next Saturday, Sunday and Monday 10-4pm , so if you missed it, you have one more chance to see the Exhibition.

Sales and commissions made to date are keeping me hard at work, so while manning the Gallery during the month long exhibition, there is was not an idle moment!

I love getting commissions.  They so often send you off on a track you never would have thought of.  Here I am busy drawing and planning colours for several new and exciting pieces of work.

The more intricate ones I will start now the Exhibition is over, as I need all my wits about me to do these.  It's been great meeting and talking about my work with all the Exhibition visitors but I do need uninterrupted peace to concentrate on complicated pieces!

The  SUMMER EXHIBITION  in my 17C canalside Gallery is showing the largest ever collection of my work shown to date.  All my latest work and some old favourites are  on display and for sale, most of which are framed and back-lit.  It's stunning!

Also included in the exhibition are many original handmade Batik Lampshades, prints, paperweights and cards.

It's on every day for a month from Sat July 20th to Sun Aug 18th, so do try to make it.  I'd love to meet you and show you round in person.  If you can, email which day you might be coming to make sure I'm there to greet you.

Leaping frogs, dragonflies, bullrushes and waterlilies make up this lively Pondlife lampshade (8"high x8"dia).  I have used the distinctive Batik crackle effect for the dragonfly wings and extensively on the background to get lively movement all around the shade.

This 'Pondlife' lampshade (8" tall x 8"diameter) SOLD in the Summer Exhibition.
If you would like to commission one like it, let me know by email.  Prices from £150

Grand Canal with Poles

I set myself quite a challenge with this Venice study.  The rich Palazzi on the Grand Canal are by their nature beautifully complicated with elaborate decoration and the striped mooring poles in the foreground just added to the intricacy of the reflections!

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Grand Canal with Poles' (38cm x 28cm inc frame) is now SOLD

Sunset Gondola

Venice is so beautiful as the sun sets behind the San Salute church.  This small A4 size study is the latest in a series I have been working on since New Year.  There's something incredibly exciting, after a week of intense work, to scrape off the wax, iron out the excess and then hold the finished work up to the light.  This one was so much as I hoped it would be it caused a sharp intake of breath!  Every now and again I do a piece of Batik that has a bit of magic about it, that 'wow' factor and this is one of those.

It is now framed and back-lit (48cm x 38cm inc frame) and SOLD at the Exhibition Preview in the Gallery for £395.

Moonlight Gondola

I've been working on this one all week and I've just finished it.  It's come out just how I wanted it, very strong, very dramatic - I'm really pleased and back-lit it's stunning!

I can't seem to get Venice out of my mind at the moment and I now have a new, quite serious ambition.  I am going to try to find a small galleria/shop in Venice who would sell my original work.  I'm not sure yet how I set about finding the right one but when I do, I will of course have to go there in person to meet the owner (I have even  been teaching myself Italian), show my work, and maybe get inspiration for more!

This Batik original of 'Moonlight Gondola' (38cm x 44cm inc frame) is now SOLD, mounted, framed and back-lit for £395.

For this simple little 'Poppy' original I have used the Batik 'crackle' effect extensively in the background, working the red dye into the cracks in the wax to create the marbled texture.

This original Batik is framed (10"x8" inc frame) and is now SOLD but if you would like to commission me to make you a similar one, just email me and we can discuss price.

We have quite a few buzzards nesting in the area where I walk Charlie (my collie).  They are really magnificent up close but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of those talons!

This small framed original 'Buzzard' (12"x10" inc frame) is FOR SALE in my Gallery for £75.  If you would like to buy it, send me an email.

This 'Three Dragonflies' Batik original is framed (14"x11" inc frame) and is now SOLD .....

.....  but I still have this little one (11" x 9" inc frame), appropriately titled 'Two Dragonflies'   It is currently FOR SALE in the Gallery for £125

If you are interested in buying it, just email me.

I love foxgloves.  I let them seed in my garden wherever they want!

I made this small 'Foxgoves' original as a prize in  a competition, but if you would like to commission one like it, just email me

This 'Foxgloves' lampshade is the latest addition to the 'Foxglove' range.  It was commissioned at the 2013 Summer Exhibition by a dear friend of mine to make a matching pair to her 'Sweet Peas' lampshade.

If you would like one yourself, just email me.

Venice Bridges

'Ponte del Squero'

This small study is a new version of the much larger picture 'Venice with Poles' which I did years ago.  In this one, 'Ponte del Squero' I have changed the colour of the poles to red, to give them even more impact as the focal point of the work.

This scene is of a very quiet backwater not far from the busy Fondamenta Nuove, with the gondolas moored under the protection of the bridge.

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik (25cm x 36cm inc frame)  'Ponte del Squero' is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £195

'Ponte del Megio'

Here is a simple Venetian scene with the pretty bridge, 'Ponte del Megio', over a quiet canal in the Sante Croce district.  I have deliberately kept the houses plain, laying on the wax with a wide brush, to contrast with the delicate intricacy of the iron railings of the bridge.

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Ponte del Megio' (25cm x 36cm inc frame)  is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £195

'Venice Bridge 1'

This, one of a series of studies of la bella Venezia, is another bridge scene.  The sun is shining and the colours are bright.  I have used the Batik 'crackle' effect both to give texture to the sky and the crumbling decayed look of the old buildings.  Again, the reflections in the still water of the canal are the main focus of the study.

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Venice Bridge 1' (38cm x 28cm inc frame) is SOLD

'Venice Bridge 2'

This is one of a series of little Venice studies. It is of a pretty bridge typical of many in Venice.  As ever I have concentrated on the reflections to show the form and surface of the water.  I have used the Batik crackle effect to show the crumbling Venetian facades.

This study though shows an example of the pitfalls of working in Batik!  Whilst waxing the white areas of the bridge, I (for some unknown reason) missed the last section of the railings on the bridge.  I didn't realise my mistake until several colours down the line when, with much cursing for my stupidity, I then waxed in the missing railings - but they are now brown.  The Batik process is very unforgiving.  Once you've missed a bit, it's too late - you can't go back!  I was still rather pleased with the way the whole study had turned out though with the brown railings appearing to be in deep shadow, so this time I think I got away with it!

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Venice Bridge 2'  (36cm x 25cm inc frame) is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £195

'Lady with a Red Umbrella'

This is of my late mother, although she would never have carried a bright red umbrella like this one but I needed the red to help lead the eye to focus on her.  She and I went to Venice many times together, and I have very fond memories of our trips.

'Lady with a Red Umbrella' (38cm x 28cm) is SOLD in the Gallery for £250

The 'Lady with a Green Umbrella' is walking over a pretty bridge over typical narrow Venetian side canal.  This small study (15"x11" inc frame) is framed and back-lit and FOR SALE in the Gallery for £250

The Batik originals of these Venetian Bridges are FOR SALE, framed and back-lit, all individually priced.  If you are interested in buying one, email me.  I can post anywhere, just ask for a quote and I will work out the post & packing costs for you.

Reflections of Venice

I feel I've spent my whole batiking life (over 40 years!) trying to conquer reflections, trying to get the free flow of the wax to capture the 'liquid' look of water.

This study of reflections in Venice is probably the most challenging so far!  It is from a photograph I took when I was last there and has been drawn out on the cloth and waiting for me on the light-table I work on for months.  I think I've been putting off tackling it!

Well, now it's finished and I'm really happy with the result.  Because of its almost abstract style, I felt more free to express myself and got quite brave with the speed I needed to lay down the hot liquid wax to get the fluid lines.  It's only small (about A4 size) so it was really complicated to work on and I worked in short stints to avoid mistakes so easily made when I'm tired.  These days though I'm working for pure pleasure, away from all the pressures of the past, so can I spend as long as it takes to get things right.

Framed and back-lit, this original Batik 'Reflections of Venice' (37cm x 27cm inc frame) is FOR SALE in the Gallery for £250
If you would like to buy it, send me an email.
